Many Northern Rivers businesses and organisations were contacted between August and December 2025 and asked if they support the return of train services to our region.

The majority of those we spoke to were overwhelmingly in favour (over 95% of those asked), and they have signed our Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that expresses their support for this project, which we have named the ‘Country to Surf Train’ (CTST).

We would like to thank all the businesses and organisations (below) who see the benefits of extending a regular, non-road, all-weather, climate-friendly train service along the 72 kms of railway line between Lismore and through Byron Shire to Yelgun. A bike/walking path could also potentially be situated nearby within the railway corridor.

The 1st stage of rail renewal runs between Byron Bay and Mullumbimby; the 2nd stage from Byron Bay to Bangalow; the 3rd stage extends to Billinudgel (for the 7,000 residents around Ocean Shores) and Yelgun; and the 4th stage runs to Lismore from Bangalow.
